The Formless Vox and Speaking Likeness: 2016 Happy Chinese New Year: Fantastic Art China Officially Announced in Beijing
“Happy Chinese New Year: Fantastic Art China” is hosted by the Ministry of Culture of the People’s Republic of China, and undertaken by Central Academy of Fine Arts with the association of US-China Cultural Institute (Committee of 100). It is the first major international art event that promotes traditional Chinese culture in the form of contemporary public art. Since the Vice Premier Liu Yandong gave it its name in 2009, “Happy Chinese New Year” has evolved into the hitherto largest and most influential comprehensive art event that China has launched overseas. As one of the important sub-brands of “Happy Chinese New Year”, “Fantastic Art China” has brought in the finest visual art and music. Joined by the preeminent artists and art institutes from both inside and outside of China, on the occasion of the Spring Festival, Fantastic Art China shall promote Chinese culture to the world in the form of public art.

The 2016 “Happy Chinese New Year: Fantastic Art China” has invited Prof. Fan Di’an, President of Central Academy of Fine Arts, as the director; Prof. Yu Ding, the Dean of the School of Art Management and Education of Central Academy of Fine Arts, as the chief planner; and Prof. Huang Jiancheng, the Vice Dean of the School of Urban Design of Central Academy of Fine Arts, as the chief designer. The theme of this event, The Formless Vox and Speaking Likeness, is both a reflection of the traditional Chinese world view of the great unity of heaven and man, and an interpretation of the highest achievement in the traditional Chinese aesthetics. The 2016 Fantastic Art China will further explore the progression from traditional culture into contemporary art. It will employ auditory and visual art as the core elements in the event, and, through the transition between the two forms, apply the aforementioned theme to the event series, including the opening ceremony, demonstration of public art, firework performance on Hudson River, lighting installation at the Empire State Building, as well as an international creative festival. 2016 “Happy Chinese New Year: Fantastic Art China” will commence on the 4th of February, 2016 (the 26th day of the last month of lunar calendar), and last till the 10th of February, 2016 (the 3rd day of the first month of lunar calendar). The exhibitions and events are to be held at prominent venues in New York, including Park Avenue Armory, Lincoln Center, Empire State Building, Times Square, Jacob K. Davits Convention Center, and Pier 84 at Hudson River Park. This event series receives the full support of the Ministry of Culture of China, China National Arts Fund, and Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in New York. We will fully cooperate with art and culture institutes, institutions of higher education, media, and communication organizations, and present to the world a feast of Chinese art on the eve of the 2016 Chinese New Year.
